Beavers dig past Miners behind Atwell’s hat trick

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

EAST RIVER —  Abby Atwell turned a hat trick, scoring three goals as nine different ladies scored to lead the Bluefield Lady Beavers to an 11-1 sectional tournament win over the Mingo Central Lady Miners, Tuesday night at the East River Soccer Complex.

It was iron girl soccer as each team had 11 players and each girl played all 80 minutes for each team.

Lady Beavers coach Ricky Lester said, “We had a long layoff, about two weeks. We were worried about being a little rusty but we needed it, we were so banged up and injured. But we came out, did well and I’m pleased.”

Bluefield’s scores came in bunches against the young Miners. Lexy O’Dell found the goal four minutes into the game.

Kelsey Fry scored in the 14th minute and half a minute after Fry’s goal, Atwell scored the first of her three. Atwell scored again in the 19th and 24th minute.

Emma Cole made it 6-0 in the 25th minute and Jessica Shanklin and Destiny Simms each found the back of the net before intermission and Bluefield carried an 8-0 lead into the break.

In the second half Aramus Wimmer, Erika DiNovo and Tyra Jackson rounded out the Bluefield scoring.

Mingo Central got on the board in the 37th minute of the second half with a goal by Summer Cline.

Mingo Central had only one player of its 11 who had played soccer prior to this season and eight of the 11 girls were either freshmen or sophomores.

“The girls played really hard,” said Miners’ coach Donna Smith. “We really have become family this year. Next year I think we are going to start with a better attitude and I think we’ve come a long way this year regardless of what our wins were. I think we have a good head start for next year.”

Bluefield moves on to play PikeView with the winner advancing to the regionals next week. Lester knows his team will have its hands full against the Lady Panthers.

“It will be a tough battle,” Lester said. “PikeView is the team to beat as I said the first of the year. They’re wearing the crown. We’re going to come out here, do the best we can and give them a good fight.”

PikeView and Bluefield will meet Thursday at 5 p.m. at the East River Soccer Complex for the sectional championship.
