Owens to be honored Saturday at Concord

ATHENS — Billy Owens, a former Concord University football player, has been named an honorary team captain for Saturday’s homecoming game against Fairmont State, Mountain Lion head coach Garin Justice announced Monday.

Owens was the first African American student-athlete in Concord history. He played end for the Mountain Lions during the 1954 and 1955 seasons.

Prior to attending Concord, Owens, a native of the Mercer County community of Giatto, fought in the Korean War. After leaving Concord, Owens went onto to work at the Long Beach Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, N.Y. for 34 years before retiring in 2006.

Owens will be recognized prior to Saturday’s game before joining current Concord captains at midfield for the official coin toss. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Callaghan Stadium-Shott Field.
