Honoring Brian

Whited, French win memorial race at Bluefield State

BLUEFIELD — An estimated 100 runners and walkers converged on the Bluefield State College campus Tuesday evening to take part in the eighth annual Brian Delp 5K Memorial Run.

The event is in honor of Brian Delp, a BSC student who was tragically killed while assisting a stranded motorist on Route 460 on Nov. 2, 2002. Funds raised support athletic scholarships at the school.

This year’s overall winner was Nick Whited who finished the course in 17:20. It is Whited’s ninth win of the year and the sixth time he has won this particular race.

“If I ever quit running or get hurt, I will always come and support this one because it’s for a really good cause,” Whited said. “Brian’s parents are real involved with it. The campus gets involved and it goes for a really good cause. I’ll keep coming back as long as God let’s me keep running, I’ll keep coming back.”

The first female to cross the finish line was Kristy French. French, a native of Bland, Va., is also a cross-country runner at Bluefield State.

“It’s a good, laid out course with a few rolling hills and it’s a good challenge,” French said. “It’s nice to be able to help in the memory of Brian Delp.

“The Sullivan girls gave me a good race and I want to give them props.”

The course began at the main entrance off Route 52, winds its way through campus and Bluefield’s North Side, crosses the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge and continues down Bluefield Avenue before turning and retracing the route back to campus, concluding at the Student Union.

Betty Carroll coordinated this year’s event.

“Carla and Sam Delp started the run and the Delp Scholarship to honor their son, Brian,” Carroll pointed out. “All the funds from the Delp run go to athletic scholarships and that’s important because all of our athletes need financial aid. As long as they are in good students in good standing, they can apply for that.”

In addition to people from throughout the community taking part in the race/walk, members of various athletic teams at the college as well as BSC President Marsha Kotseng ran or walked the course.
