Bland County shoots past Rebels; Bulldogs bite Marion

BLAND,Va. — The Bland County Bears opened the season with a 51-47 win over the Patrick Henry-Glade Springs Rebels, Tuesday night in Bland.

Tyler Faulkner led the Bears with 15 points and Zach Gwyn added 12 including three treys. Dylan Coe led Patrick Henry with 14.

MARION, Va. — Juwan Jordan scored 16 points and Isyah Hagy had a double-double as Tazewell opened its season with a win at Marion.

The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures, led by Jordan. Hagy had 10 points and 11 rebounds while Tanner Catron and Colin Hancock each dropped in 11 points.

Marion’s Riley Blevins scored a game-high 22 points and Hunter Lefler drained five threes.

Tazewell, which made its debut under new head coach William Lester, returns to action Friday night, hosting the Graham G-Men.

Mercer Christian 87, Life Academy 33

PRINCETON — Mercer Christian improved to 8-1 on the season with a win over Life Academy from Roanoke, Va., at the MCA Gymnasium.

Caleb Janning topped the Cavaliers’ scoring column with 19 points and Xander Bailey popped in 10 along with six assists. Daniel Booth had 10 rebounds, nine assists and six steals, while J.J. Easter dished out seven assists. MCA had 23 steals in the game.

The Cavaliers return to the court Friday in Beckley against Victory Christian.

EAST RIDGE, Ky. — In Grundy’s first game of the season, Morgan Hall wasted no time getting her 1,000th career point. In fact, she had a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds, though the Lady Wave took a seven-point loss.

Autumn Sperry added 17 points for Grundy, nailing five 3-pointers. As a team the Lady Wave hit nine treys. East Ridge’s top scorer was Temera Thacker with 18, including four 3-pointers.

HURLEY, Va. — Adrianna Cline scored 19, Kourtney Cook 18 and Ariel Endicott 11 to lead Hurley past River View in the season opener for both teams.

Freshman Kaitlyn Dobbs led River View with 16 points and Kiersten Dority tossed in 11.

Hurley plays next on Friday at Northwood. River View plays next on Dec. 11 as it hosts Independence in the Little General Tournament.

MONTCALM — The Greater Beckley Crusaders invaded Montcalm and handed the Lady Generals a season-opening loss.

Heather Nicewander led Montcalm with six points. Brooke Matherly was Greater Beckley’s leading scorer with 11.

Montcalm will visit Mount View on Friday.
