Local colleges struggle on Saturday

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — The Bluefield College women’s soccer team suffered its first setback of the season, with host Georgetown College claiming a 3-0 victory Saturday.

Bluefield (4-1) ended its program-best four-game win streak, in their first MSC matchup of the year. Kayla Richardson made seven saves in net for BC.

Bluefield was held to just six shots on the afternoon—a season low—with just three being on target. Conversely, Georgetown (1-1-1) fired 14 shots, 10 on goal.

The Bluefield College men lost 1-0 to Georgetown. Bluefield (2-4, 0-1) posted nine shots, five on goal.

The Rams play at MSC opponent Pikeville on Wednesday.


BLUEFIELD — Lengthy runs by the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) led to a shutout of Bluefield College, 25-19, 25-18, 25-16 Saturday afternoon at the Ned Shott Gymnasium on the campus of Bluefield State College.

Bluefield was led by Jasmine Morrow’s 11 kills and Sydney Spencer’s 26 assists. Ashlyn Van Dyke and Morrow tallied 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Bluefield (1-8, 0-4 MSC) hosting Pikeville at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Concord swept

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The Concord University volleyball team ended its weekend at the King University Invitational with a pair of 3-0 losses Saturday to Southern Wesleyan and King.

Concord (3-4) lost to Wesleyan 25-12, 25-18 and 25-18 before dropping the final match of the invitational to King 25-18, 25-22, 25-20, unable to overcome 11 King aces.

Brytni Willis had 17 kills for the day. Against Southern Wesleyan, Concord was led by Sarah Jones’ 11 kills, 10 digs and two blocks.

On Friday, Concord defeated North Greenville and Lees-McRae to give CU a 2-2 mark for the weekend.

Concord hosts Bluefield State and WVU–Tech on Wednesday in a triangular.
