Richlands sweeps Grundy at the net

GRUNDY, Va. — Balance and power may sound more like a term from a Government class, but it fit Richlands perfectly in its 3-0 sweep at Grundy Monday night.

Excellent balance all over the floor and the power of Sarah Compton at the net carried the Lady Blues to a 25-13, 25-21, 25-13 win over the Lady Wave.

Grundy made spirited rallies in the middle of all three games, but the setting of Richlands freshman Olivia Harmon and the net game of Compton and others kept the Lady Wave at bay.

Harmon finished with 22 assists and was one of a number of Blues who served the ball well. She was also one of seven Richlands players with kills or blocks at the net.

“All our girls hit well and our setter, to be so young she spreads the ball around well and gets the ball to different hitters,” Richlands coach Ronnie Sparks said. “We did a good job tonight hitting the ball. Getting that kind of balance keeps you from being one-dimensional.”

A senior, Compton contributed nine kills, most of them straight into the floor. Nadia Ashiq came up with 13 digs for the Lady Blues (5-2) against their old Southwest District and new Conference 39 Group 2A rival.

“Sarah’s got a lot of power,” Sparks added. “We had her setting last year and Sarah and Hannah (Alley) went out on the right side and gave us extra blocking.

“We moved them over to the middle and I think that’s where they’re most comfortable. Sarah loves to block and her hitting is a lot better this year.”

Compton added 13 service points, including four aces and Alley had five aces among her match-high 18 service points. Mac Cordill contributed 16 points with four aces.

Hannah Lowe had 13 service points and 13 digs for a young Grundy squad.

“We’re a young team and if we can be more consistent, especially on our back row, we should continue to get better,” Grundy coach Kasey Cantrell said.

“We got a couple of good blocks there from Lexie (Elswick). If we can get her up there more on the net and Sarah Boyd up there more on the net it can really help us.”

Elswick and Boyd each had three kills and Elswick came up with three blocks. Kacie Owens led the Lady Wave with 15 service points and Tiffany Deel had a team-high 11 digs.
