Late-blooming Rays win seventh straight

PRINCETON — Make it seven wins in a row for the late-blooming Princeton Rays.

Jacob Faria and Luis Cabrera combined to allow the Elizabethton Twins only three hits in a 2-0 shutout victory on a beautiful Sunday evening at Hunnicutt Field.

Faria (3-3) struck out nine Twins, walked one and allowed two hits, both of them singles, in six innings on the mound. He lowered his earned-run average to 2.20.

Cabrera struck out the first three batters he faced and fanned five in his three frames of work. He gave up only one walk and one ninth-inning single with two outs, picking up his second save.

Faria survived a bases-loaded situation in the top of the first, after two Twins reached via Princeton’s only two errors of the day and Mitch Garver drew a walk. Faria then struck out Zach Larson and an infield groundout ended the threat.

The Rays gave their pitcher the only run he would need in the second with the help of Twins starting pitcher Stephen Gonsalves, who faced his own bases-loaded jam.

He surrendered a leadoff single to Hunter Lockwood, then walked Armando Araiza and David Garcia. Lockwood scored on a wild pitch by Gonsalves (1-1), who ended up striking out nine batters but suffered his first Appy League defeat since his recent callup from the Gulf Coast League.

Garcia, who was 2 for 2 at the plate for Princeton, knocked a sixth-inning double to left that scored Yoel Araujo with the final score of the day. Araujo, Lockwood, Bralin Jackson and Leo Correa were the only other Rays with hits on Sunday.

The Rays wrap up their home schedule today and Tuesday with a pair of 7:05 p.m. games against the Twins. Tonight will be fan appreciation night.
