Princeton pitching stifles Danville

PRINCETON — Princeton Rays pitchers D.J. Slaton and Oscar Armenta combined to strike out 10 Danville batters and limit the Braves to three hits as the Rays launched a three-game series with a 3-1 win at Hunnicutt Field on Sunday evening.

Hunter Lockwood and Spencer Edwards were 2 for 4 at the plate for Princeton. Lockwood drove Edwards in with two Princeton runs, raising his RBI total for the season to 29. Johnny Eierman smacked his fourth home run, a solo shot in the seventh, to conclude the scoring.

The Braves got doubles from Connor Lien and Seth Moranda.

Edwards got Princeton’s first hit, a first-inning single. He stole second, reached third on a groundout and scored on Lockwood’s single to center field. The two combined in a similar fashion in the third to create a 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Slaton and the Rays defense retired eight of the Braves’ first nine batters.

The Braves cut the margin to one run in the fourth inning. Princeton wiped out a base runner with a double play moments before Jacob Schrader hit a solo home run over left field.

Armenta took over the mound in the seventh and allowed two base runners, both on walks. He gave up no hits and struck out three Braves, earning his first save of the year.

First pitch tonight in Princeton is set for 7:05 p.m. Eight of the Rays’ remaining 11 games will take place at Hunnicutt Field.
