Graham tennis and soccer squads get Mountain Empire wins

BLUEFIELD — The Graham G-Girls tennis team completed a perfect Mountain Empire District season by defeating Grayson County 9-0, Thursday at the Bluefield City Courts. The G-Girls finished 10-0 in the district and are 13-1 overall.

Graham wraps up regular-season play today at Abingdon and starts MED tournament play Monday at Fort Chiswell.

EAST RIVER — It took overtime for the Graham G-Men to take down the Grayson County Blue Devils, Thursday evening at the East River Soccer Complex.

Forrest Yates became GHS’ all-time scorer as he scored two goals on penalty kicks, the 96th and 97th of his career. Alex Aiello scored the game-winner in overtime on an assist from Nathan Figueroa.

Graham 8-3-1, plays tonight in a non-district match at Abingdon. The G-Men open Mountain Empire District tournament play May 22, at Fort Chiswell against Grayson.


Bland County 10, Fort Chiswell 7

WYTHEVILLE, Va. — Zach Gwyn drove in five runs and Aaron Rose hit a home run, as Bland County earned a Mountain Empire District win over the Pioneers.

Gwyn and Rose were joined with two hits each by Tyler Faulkner, Ryan Dillow and Tyler White. Faulker and Dillow drove in a run apiece. Rose homered in the third.

Lane Edmonds had two hits and five RBIs, including a three-run first inning home run for Fort Chiswell. Levi Mooney also had two hits.

Rose, who had allowed one earned run all season before the home run by Edmonds, was one of four Bland County pitchers in the game.

Bland County (11-9, 4-6) will begin MED tournament play on Monday, and expects to qualify for a berth in the Region C tourney the following week.

Fort Chiswell (9-10, 4-5) will complete its regular season on Saturday by hosting Galax.

Narrows 8, Graham 3

NARROWS, Va. — Will Patteson and Rodney Perdue each had a pair of hits and Kelly Dent, Joe Hall and Tyler Evans each had a safety to help lead the Narrows Green Wave to a 6-3 MED win over the Graham G-Men, Thursday evening in a six-inning game.

Evans, in relief of starting pitcher Hall, got the victory for the Green Wave, while McKinley Webb suffered the loss for Graham.

Narrows (12-5-1, 6-3) plays at Galax today.

Graham 9, Narrows 2

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Graham’s JV team picked up a 9-2 win over Narrows, Thursday.

Ben Meade pitched six innings, gave up three hits, struck out nine and did not allow a run. At the plate Meade had a hit with two RBIs and scored a run.

Clay Webb was 3-for-4 for Graham and Ben Street had a hit and closed out the game on the mound.


Grundy 7, Haysi 3

GRUNDY, Va. — Morgan Hall had three hits and Shelby Yates added two, and both drove in a run apiece, leading the Golden Wave to a Black Diamond District victory over the Tigers.

Misty Kelly struck out eight and scattered six hits for the Golden Wave in the circle. Shelby and Emily Yates scored two runs each.  

Haysi was led by Sydney Sutherland with three hits.

Grundy and Haysi will meet Monday in the opening round of the BDD tourney, with the winner playing Honaker for the title the following day.
