BASTIAN, Va. —
The Bland County Bears defied the rainy forecast on Saturday and came away with a sweep of the Maroons from George Wythe High School at Skip Dillow Memorial Field by scores of 6-0 and 5-4.
Bland County (9-8) stormed back from a 4-1 deficit in the fifth and final inning of game two to seal the sweep.
Playing as the visiting team, the Bears pulled even at 4-4 in the top of the frame when Ryan Dillow smacked a double with the bases loaded that scored two teammates. Darryl Clark then tallied the eventual winning run on a single by Mason Christian.
Aaron Rose took the mound for the Bears in the bottom of the fifth. He struck out two batters and ended the game by inducing a groundout to shortstop, earning the save.
Dillow was 2 for 3 at bat in the second game, while Rose was 2 for 4. Tyler Faulkner batted 1 for 2 with an RBI.
For George Wythe (4-13), Grant Anders was 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI.
In the first game of the day, Kalub Lambert pitched all five innings and allowed the visitors just four hits. The Bears made the most of their own four hits, scoring six times with the help of six George Wythe errors.
Bryan King and Andy Pauley each went 1 for 1 at bat and drove in a run. Rose had a double and Zach Gwyn added a hit for the Bears. Only one Bland County batter struck out in game one.
The Bears (9-8) are scheduled to play Graham High on Monday, making up a game that was washed out by rain. If the field at Graham Middle School is playable, the game will take place there at 5 p.m. The backup plan is to play at Bastian at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
