Beavers still alive in state tennis

CHARLESTON — Bluefield’s Jose Tarin and Paul Hoffmann advanced to the state semifinals as they both picked up victories in their opening matches of the West Virginia Class AA-A state tennis tournament.

Turin, after getting a first round bye, defeated Drew Poling of St. Marys 8-4. The win kept Turin undefeated in singles play this season. Hoffmann defeated Marcus Moore, also of St. Marys 8-6.

The Beavers’ Justin Freund defeated Logan Webster of Berkeley Springs in his first round match, but then lost to Luke Flanagan of Williamstown 8-6 in the quarterfinals. It was Freund’s first loss of the season.

Doubles play begins today as Freund and Turin take on a duo from either Huntington St. Joseph or Wheeling Central. Hoffmann and Tyler Myers will play a duo from Keyser.

Bluefield coach Cindy Stonestreet said, “Despite Justin (Freund) losing his first match of the year the guys are really looking great. We are in contention.”

In Class AAA, Princeton’s William Robertson lost to Will Wheatley of Washington High School in singles 8-4. In doubles, Robertson and Jacob Jones fell to the Wheatley/Thomas team from Washington.

In girls play, Bluefield’s Molly Lovern won her first match over Marissa Merrill of Lincoln 8-1. Lovern then fell in the quarterfinals 8-1 to Veronica Mueller of Ritchie County.

After having a first round bye, the Beavers’ Alex Lewis lost 8-1 to Courtney Mobley of Poca.

Sarah Brady, playing her first match in the quarterfinals, lost 8-6 to Bess McNabb of Ravenswood 8-6.

Claire Bailey will play her first singles match against Kari Amtower of Keyser.

In doubles play Zoe Nicewander and Lewis fell 8-6 to the team of Rogers and Hill from Grafton.

Bluefield’s two other doubles teams will be in action today. Lovern and Bailey will face Crawford and Sayre from Oak Glen, while Brady and Brooke Cundiff take on Amtower and Freeburn of Keyser.
