Roundup: Radford tops G-Girls on soccer pitch

Richlands shuts out Tazewell

EAST RIVER — A rugged soccer match ended with Radford High School taking a 4-1 win from the Graham G-Girls on Monday evening at East River Soccer Complex.

The visitors from the New River Valley got their first score about two minutes into the match. Whitney Browning of Graham fought off two defenders and netted an unassisted goal in the 10th minute for a 1-1 tie.

Radford scored once more in the first half and added two more in the second period.

The visitors incurred three yellow cards and Graham was not assessed a card in the physical game.

Graham (8-2) plays at Galax this Thursday in a preview of the upcoming Mountain Empire District championships.


Richlands 6, Tazewell 0

TAZEWELL, Va. — Cassidy Richardson picked up her 26th career hat trick with three goals for Richlands in Monday’s victory at Tazewell High School. Makenley Davis, Nadia Ashiq and Montana Hearl also scored for the Blues (5-1-1, 2-0-1 SWD).

Nikki Sparks was in goal for Richlands to assist in the shutout.

Richlands plays a home match today against district foe Carroll County.



Narrows 10, Graham 3

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Rodney Perdue batted in two runs on a 2-for-3 afternoon on Monday for Narrows, which bounded to an 8-0 lead.

For Graham, Spencer Sheets and Corey Monninger were each 2 for 4. Nine pitchers saw action for the two teams.

Graham (4-8) hosts Bluefield today at 4 p.m.

Greenbrier East 12, James Monroe 0

LINDSIDE — Seniors Harrison Martin and R.J. Massie each drove in a pair of runs as the Spartans banged out 12 hits and shut out their neighbors to the south in a six-inning game on Monday.

Micah Deskins and Reed McNeer each had a hit and stole a base for the Mavericks, who committed four errors to none for Greenbrier East.

James Monroe (7-10) travels to Wyoming East today.

Girls Tennis

Graham 6, Radford 3

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The Graham girls tennis team put in a long day and improved to 9-1 at the end of Monday’s non-district match. Rebecca Day and Mykenzie Roach each went three sets to claim singles victories. Two of the three doubles encounters ended with 8-6 Graham wins.

Graham plays Thursday at Galax in a Mountain Empire District match.

Richlands 9, Tazewell 0

TAZEWELL, Va. — The Richlands girls swept the Lady Bulldogs Monday at Lincoln-shire Park. Jordan Compton and Carly Dye posted 8-0 victories for Richlands.

Tazewell will seek their first win of the season today, hosting Abingdon, followed by a home match with George Wythe on Wednesday.
