Tiffin Dragons hold off Big Blues

TIFFIN, Ohio — Bluefield State cut a 16-point halftime deficit to two points on three occasions in the late going Sunday afternoon before Tiffin University claimed a 101-86 win in the season debut for both squads.

Each time the Big Blues came within one possession of the lead, Tiffin got points from star guard Joe Graessle to climb out of trouble. Graessle finished with a game-high 30 points and seven steals, four rebounds, three assists and three turnovers.

Bluefield State sophomore Shakir Dunning scored nine points in a 16-4 run by the Big Blues early in the second half that trimmed Tiffin’s advantage to 67-64. The Dragons went on a late 14-2 splurge to get breathing room after BSC again cut the lead to three points at 81-78.

Treon Claiborne netted 24 points and 10 rebounds for Bluefield State, one of four Big Blues who reached double-figure scoring. Geron Tate and Remar Brothers came off the bench to score 18 and 15 points, and Dunning had 17.

Sam Ouedraogo played 37 minutes for BSC and topped the rebounding chart with 15.

Bluefield State shot 36 percent from the floor and sank 24 of 41 free throw tries, while Tiffin made 55 percent of its field-goal attempts and went 32 for 41 at the foul line. The Big Blues held a 51 to 40 rebound advantage; each team had 16 turnovers.

Bluefield State hosts Bluefield College on Tuesday at the Ned Shott Gym with the women’s game at 5:30 p.m. and the men’s game to follow.
