Spartans squeak past Bobcats, Generals win second game of season

RADFORD, Va. — Brian Mann scored on a 50-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, as the Spartans remained unbeaten on the season at 8-0 with a 14-7 win over Radford on Friday night.

Mann ran for 148 yards, while Brett Whitlow added 81. Tyler Perdue put Giles up 7-0 at the break with a 1-yard run.

Marcus Finley, who had 103 yards for the Bobcats, tied the score at 7-7 in the third quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run.

Galax 55, Narrows 7

GALAX, Va. — Steven Peoples did not break the state record of 502 rushing yards he set last week, but he did run for 230 yards and four touchdowns on nine carries in the Maroon Tide's win over the Green Wave.

Joseph Dixon ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and also returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown for Galax (4-4, 2-1 Mountain Empire District). Jayson Carr returned an interception 69 yards for another score.

Narrows (3-5, 1-2) was held to 106 yards of total offense and turned the ball over twice.

Montcalm 33, Tygarts Valley 6

MILL CREEK — Jason Grose ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries, and the Generals improved to 2-7 with a win over the Wildcats.

Ryan Absher (8-71, Colton Egnor (7-43) and Travis Duncan (2-28) also contributed on the ground. Egnor also scored a touchdown.

Dakota Lanter completed two passes for 29 yards.

Brady Brown also recovered a fumble and returned it for a Montcalm score.  

Montcalm (2-7) will conclude its season on Friday at Hannan.



Meadow Bridge 66, PikeView 27

MEADOW BRIDGE — Class A No. 13 Meadow Bridge raced out to a 38-0 first-half lead and rolled past Class AA PikeView 66-27 Friday.

Jake Parker only carried the ball 19 times, but finished with 255 yards and six touchdowns (3, 49,15, 36, 16, 35) to lead the 7-2 Wildcats.

Ryan Church (67) and Abber Gelsinger (4) added touchdown runs for Meadow Bridge.

PikeView (3-6) was led by Daniel Brown with 91 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

Peyton Richmond led the Wildcats on defense with 10 tackles.

Meadow Bridge (7-2) hosts Sherman Friday.

CLINCHPORT, Va. — The Eagles outscored the Panthers 28-12 in the second quarter to overcome a 27-16 halftime deficit to take a non-district win.

Dakota Hood led Rye Cove with 120 yards rushing on 21 carries and a pair of touchdowns while Uriah Addison had four catches for 110 yards and two TDs.

Austin Shortridge led Twin Valley with 13 carries for 125 yards.

SUMMERSVILLE — The Class AA No. 11 Nicholas County Grizzlies scored on the first offensive play of the game on a 54-yard pass from Tyler Sagraves to Wil Mayes on their way to a 47-0 victory over River View (3-5) Friday.

Wil Mayes found the end zone four more times on the ground (8, 2, 9, 32) and finished with 159 yards.

Andrew Woods scored on a 7-yard run, and lineman Hunter Coleman scored on a 54-yard interception return for the Grizzlies.

Nicholas County (7-2) is off Friday before closing out the season with a trip to Richwood the following Friday.
