Bland County's Otey 11th at Sugar Hollow; MCA drops 2 at the net

BRISTOL, Va. — Bland County senior Zach Otey placed 11th  at the 40th Randy Smith Classic cross country meet on Thursday at Sugar Hollow Park.

Jacob Cross, a freshman for the Bears, improved his personal record by nearly a minute, finishing the 3.1 mile course in 18:06. That mark helped push teammate Christian Boyd to a person best time of 18:14.

Bland County cross country coach Brian Porter has started what he calls  a Phidippides award, and awarded it this week to Cross.


Prep Volleyball

PRINCETON — Mercer Christian lost a pair of decisions to Beth Haven 25-16, 21-25, 25-23 and Elk Valley 25-19, 25-13.

Olivia Grondzik had 26 digs, six kills, five aces and three blocks in the loss to Beth Haven. Sami Goins added 12 digs, four kills, three blocks and two aces and Brooke Matherly contributed 15 digs.

Grondzik had 16 digs, four kills and three aces in the nightcap. Goins added four blocks and Leah Billings dished out three assists.

Mercer Christian (12-7) visits Montcalm on Monday.
