Grundy, Honaker face tough non-district teams

GRUNDY, Va. — Homecomings, a long road trip and a clash between two unbeatens highlight tonight's five-game slate in the Black Diamond District.

There are no league games. Grundy and Twin Valley each host a Kentucky opponent in their respective homecoming games.

Grundy (2-3) hosts Shelby Valley (3-3), while the Panthers (1-4) host Phelps (0-5).

Elsewhere Hurley (2-3) travels to Thomas Walker (1-4), Haysi (4-0) hosts Twin Springs (1-4) and Honaker (4-0) travels to Bristol to face John Battle (5-0). The Trojans' only loss since 2011 came to Honaker in last year's playoffs.

While the Honaker Tigers look to remain undefeated on the road the Haysi Tigers are heavily favored to keep their record unblemished against a Twin Springs club that's struggled in recent years.

Hurley hopes to make it two wins in a row at Thomas Walker. The Rebels ended a three-game losing streak last week at Craig County.

A two-game winning streak would be a confidence builder for a Twin Valley program that hasn't won more than three games in a season in quite some time.

The Panthers, who lost to Honaker last week, are favored against the winless Phelps Hornets tonight and expect to be competitive next week at Hannan.

"We really have to stay focused," said Twin Valley coach Tommy Crigger. "We need to win these next two games and get to 3-4 and that would be great for the program."

At Grundy it's all about shoring up a defense that's allowed 127 points in its last two games and handling adversity that crops up in the middle of games.

The challenge for the Golden Wave defense this week is to stop Shelby Valley's physical running game.

"When something does happen it seems like it takes us a while to bounce back," said Grundy coach Jeremy Ward. "That's something we've got to do a better job at, overcoming obstacles during the course of a game."
