The Bluefield State Lady Blues matched up evenly with Kentucky State University through the first half of a pitched battle Sunday afternoon at the Ned Shott Gym, then took an 85-76 loss at the hands of the Thorobreds from Frankfort, Ky.
After a combined 117 field goal attempts and 67 free throws between the two teams, the Thorobreds (3-4), who led just 40-39 at halftime, took the win by shooting 54.9 percent from the field and making 26 of 37 foul shots.
Bluefield State, which shot 39.4 percent from the floor, forced 20 turnovers. Shay Gravely had three steals and 13 points, going 6 for 6 at the foul line.
Shae Mebane recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Tasia Nolan had 17 points. The Lady Blues used 14 players.
LaShell West topped Kentucky State’s scoring with 22 points, connecting on 6 of 9 field goals and 10 of 13 free throws. Teeuntra Moore had 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
The Thorobreds held a 34 to 30 rebounding edge and blocked eight shots.
The Lady Blues’ next game is Friday at Oakland City University in Indiana.
