NARROWS, Va. —
The Narrows baseball team didn’t panic when the Graham G-Men tied Monday's game with a two-run home run in the sixth.
They regained the lead on their home diamond and advanced out of the first round of the Mountain Empire District tournament with a 6-4 win.
With the bases loaded in the sixth, Devon Turner of Narrows (13-6-1) chopped a bloop hit to score Joe Hall with the go-ahead run. The next batter, Courtland Caldwell, executed a squeeze bunt, bringing speedy Dustin Meadows to the plate with the game’s final run.
“That was really key there, hitting from the 8 and 9 hole,” said Narrows head coach Bryan Patteson.
Jacob Coffey hit the two-run homer for the G-Men to forge a 4-4 tie. He had two hits for the day and also drove in a run in the first inning to help Graham to a 2-0 lead. McKinley Webb drove in the other run with a deep double.
But Coffey was thrown out at the plate on the play by a relay from Meadows to Rodney Perdue to Kelly Dent for the third out.
Will Petteson batted 2 for 4 for Narrows with a double and two RBI. Meadows was 2 for 3.
Bryan Patteson said, “I’m proud of my kids. We’ve got 13 wins, and we’re really hoping to get into the regonal playoffs. We think we can compete there.”
The pitching chores for Narrows were shared by Will Patteson, Rodney Perdue and Kelly Dent. Together they allowed four hits.
“The pitching staff today was just great,” Bryan Patteson said. “The bats were a little cold. But at the right time, we were able to execute the squeeze play, and we got some hits when we had to.”
“I’m proud that we came from behind. That’s something we have to learn to do. If we’re going to have success in the postseason, that’s something you’ve got to do.”
“I think our team is confident, whether we’re winning or losing. To be able to come from behind is really going to be key in the regonal playoffs, if we can get in.”
The Green Wave had beaten Graham 8-3 last week. The Narrows coach said, “Graham played great. They played great last Thursday.”
Narrows (13-6-1) plays at Galax Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the tournament semifinals.
