Rose tosses one-hitter, Bears rip G-Men

Roundup: Graham wins in soccer, tennis

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Aaron Rose sparkled for Bland County on offense and defense, helping the Bears shut out Graham 12-0 in a one-hitter on Monday evening at Graham Middle School.

Rose struck out 15 batters, walked one and allowed just one infield single in his complete-game outing. He also smacked a triple in the Bears’ 12-hit attack.

Zach Gwyn batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a first-inning solo homer. Kalub Lambert was 2 for 4 and drove in four runs. Seven other Bears each had one hit.

The two teams started their district game on Friday but it was washed out in the first inning, forcing a do-over.

Bland County (10-8, 3-5 MED) plays today at 5 p.m. at home against Galax.

Carroll County 11, Richlands 6

HILLSVILLE, Va. — The Richlands Blue Tornado saw a 6-1 lead dissolve during the Cavaliers’ six-run third inning and did not score again on Monday.

Seth Burriss picked up the pitching win in a game that saw eight pitchers take the mound.

Chase Ray had two hits for Richlands (8-7, 4-3 SWD), a single and a double. The Blues got a two-run double from Ben Brown in the first inning and a two-run single by Patrick Jackson in their three-run third.

Ryan Gravley collected three hits and four RBIs for Carroll County.

Richlands plays its last regular season game today at Marion.

Boys soccer

Graham 6, Fort Chiswell 1

FORT CHISWELL, Va. — Graham peppered the home goal with shots on Monday and claimed a Mountain Empire District win. Graham reported the Fort Chiswell goalkeeper had 30 saves.

Alex Aiello got Graham’s scoring started, with an assist by Forrest Yates. Yates netted three goals and Nathan Figueroa scored twice. Aiello and Figueroa added assists as well.

Zane Gregory scored Fort Chiswell’s goal on a penalty kick in the first half, which ended with Graham up 3-1. Hunter Cook had six saves in goal for Graham.

Graham (7-3-1) concludes regular-season district play on Thursday at 5 p.m. at East River  Soccer Complex. The G-Men will play on Friday at Abingdon.


Tazewell 3, Carroll County 0

HILLSVILLE, Va. — Carter Rasnick scored all three goals and the Bulldogs earned their first district win of the spring on Monday.

Garrett Jessee pitched the shutout in goal with 27 saves.

Rasnick scored the only goal of the first half off an assist by Cory Brewster. Rasnick made it 2-0 with an unassisted score. Tanner Catron provided Rasnick with an assist on a free kick for the final goal.

Tazewell (6-8-1 overall, 1-5-1 in SWD) next plays in the Southwest District tournament on Saturday in Richlands.


Girls tennis

Graham 9, Fort Chiswell 0

FORT CHISWELL, Va. — The G-Girls allowed just one game to their hosts in a dominant match on Monday to go 7-0 in district play.

Graham (10-1, 7-0 MED) plays at Bland High on Wednesday, continuing a busy final week of regular-season action.
