James Monroe shuts out Mount View ladies

WELCH — Wednesday and Thursday were big days in the life of James Monroe senior pitcher Mikayla Wickline.  Make no mistake about it.

On Wednesday, the hard-throwing right hander signed to play softball for the next four years at Fairmont State University.

Yesterday evening, she tossed a no-hit shutout at the Mount View Lady Golden Knights, barely missing a perfect game, as the Lady Mavericks captured a 15-0 Class AA Regional tournament semi-final victory at Mike Crouse Field.

Wickline fanned thirteen of the fifteen outs she recorded, with a fly out to second and a ground out from her to first accounting for the other Lady Knight outs.

Mount View centerfielder Heather Tolnay opened the bottom of the first by drawing a walk on a 3-2 pitch to become the only base runner the Lady View would have the entire five inning contest.

Offensively, the Lady Mavericks recorded a dozen hits, led by third baseman Laine Shiflet, first baseman Samantha Ferguson and shortstop Rebecca Ratliff, who all had two safeties.

Ferguson, a junior, and Shiflet, a sophomore, lashed a pair of singles each, as Ferguson drove home three runs , while Shiflet scored three times.  Ratliff, also a tenth grader, recorded a single and a triple, plated two RBIs and scored once.

Bailee Jackson,  Hillary Hersman,  Johnna Dunbar, Wickline, Tierra Carr and senior catcher Kelsie Gillespie also added a hit apiece to the Lady Maverick offensive attack, with Gillespie driving home a pair of runs and scoring two more.

“The girls came ready to play today.  I was very pleased with how they came ready to play,” assessed James Monroe head coach Greg Wickline.

The Lady Mavericks, now 22-5, will host Westside, an 8-1 winner over Independence Wednesday evening, next Thursday at 5:30.

Of the five losses by James Monroe, all five have been against Class AAA competition.

Spoke Mount View head coach Todd McCoy, “The bottom line is if you don’t hit the ball, you’re not going to win.”

The Lady Knights finish the campaign 4-11.
