Local briefs: Sectional baseball starts tonight

JOLIET, ILL. —  West Virginia sectional baseball tournaments begin tonight, weather permitting. Bluefield will host PikeView and Austin Cordell, above, right, in Class AA Region 3, Section 4 action at Bowen Field, with James Monroe will play the winner on Tuesday. Mount View will entertain River View tonight in Region 3, Section 3 play. Bryson Allen, above, left, and Princeton opens Class AAA sectional play on Thursday by hosting Greenbrier East. Montcalm will begin Class A action on Tuesday against Meadow Bridge at Greenbrier West. Schedules...B-3.

The Bluefield Beavers tennis teams will make their annual trip to the Class AA/A state tournament this week in Charleston after winning the Region III girls and boys titles last week. Several Beavers are undefeated on the season, including Molly Lovern and the No. 3 girls doubles team that has included Sarah Brady, Brooke Cundiff and Borden Thomas. Bluefield boys Justin Freund, Jose Tarin and Paul Hoffman are also unbeaten, as are the doubles teams of Freund-Tarin and Hoffman and Tyler Myers.

A pair of Princeton boys tennis players will participate in the Class AAA tournament this week in Charleston. William Robertson, who finished second in the No. 1 singles competition in last week’s Region III matches, will go in singles and doubles. Robertson and partner Jacob Jones finished third in Region III doubles, and also qualified for further play.

Three locals West Virginia softball teams won sectional titles, and will begin regional play on Thursday. James Monroe wil visit Mount View, while Montcalm and Hannah Johnson, left, will host Fayetteville. The winners will advance to the following week, with one win needed to qualify for state tournament play.

 Former Tazewell standout Katelyn Mitchell, the starting first baseman for the Virginia Intermont softball team, recently helped the Cobras capture the AAC softball championship, with a trip to the NAIA national tourney on tap next week. Mitchell is hitting .226 with three home runs, 19 RBIs, 24 hits, 11 runs scored and six doubles.. Two Tazewell teammates are also playing at the college level, including Sydnei Lester at Liberty and Iesha Mountain at Akron. Richlands’ Megan Robinson has started all 50 games, while hitting .223, also for Liberty.
