Bluefield netters win a pair; Princeton gains a split

NEW RICHMOND — The Bluefield tennis teams ventured to Wyoming County on Saturday and the boys and girls returned with two wins each.

Both teams swept Westside 7-0.

In boys action, Jose Tarin won 8-0, Austin Tyree prevailed 8-3 and Paul Huffman won 8-1. Justin Freund and Terin took an 8-0 doubles win, and Tyree and Jordan Volmar won 8-2. Huffman and Tyler Myers won by forfeit.

The girls swept Westside, with Molly Lovern and Claire Bailey earning 8-0 singles victories. Alex Lewis and Zoe Nicewander recorded an 8-0 doubles victory.

At Wyoming East, Lewis, Sarah Brady and Bailey took 8-0 singles wins. Bailey and Lovern won 8-0 in doubles and the Bluefield girls won 7-0.

The Bluefield boys beat the Warriors, who have most of their team back, by 4-3. Freund and Terin earned their second 8-0 doubles win of the day and also won at singles. Huffman and Myers got the fourth win at doubles.

The Bluefield boys (3-0) and girls are scheduled to play next at Liberty on Tuesday.

Princeton vs. Riverside

PRINCETON —  The Princeton Senior High boys tennis team won its first match of 2013 on Saturday, defeating Riverside 6-1 in Princeton.

The Tigers’ top three singles players, William Robertson, Jacob Jones and Adam Anderson, all won 8-0.

Ryan French and Anderson combined for a doubles victory, and Matt LaMothe and Hunter Alford took the win at No. 3 doubles.

The Princeton girls fell to Riverside 5-2. Miranda Basconi  and Emily Hendricks shot to an 8-6 doubles win.

Princeton is scheduled to play Greenbrier East on Monday, Richlands on Tuesday and Woodrow Wilson on Wednesday.
