BURLINGTON, N.C. —
The Princeton Rays scored five times in the fifth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit and claim a 5-3 win over the Burlington Royals, Friday night at Burlington Athletic Park.
The Royals took the early lead when Joshua Banuelos hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first off Rays starter Trevor Lubking. It would be all the runs Burlington scored and after the first inning they tallied only three more hits in the contest.
Princeton did all its scoring in the fifth, sringing together singles, walks and wild pitches to push across five runs.
For the game Patrick Grady had a pair of hits and an RBI, Jose Paez had two RBIs and a single while Carter Burgess and Manny Sanchez each had an RBI single in the fifth frame.
Yonny Chirinos, in relief of Lubking, earned his first win of the season and Kyle McKenzie picked up his first save. Christian Flecha took the loss for Burlington.
With the win Princeton stayed within a game of the Appalachian League East Division lead, trailing Danville which beat Pulaski in extra innings.
The Rays return to Hunnicutt Field tonight to take on the Bluefield Blue Jays in a Mercer Cup battle. It will be “Shirt Off Your Back Night” as the Rays will wear special blue uniforms paying honor to the Jonathan Powell Hope Foundation. The jerseys will be auctioned during the game and following the contest the players will give the winning bidder “the shirt of their back” on the field. Game time is 7:05.
