Hall scores 30 in Grundy win

BRISTOL, Va. — It was as quiet on the floor, for the most part, as it was in the mostly empty stands in Virginia High's Bearcat Den.

Grundy made its share of noise, however, at the end.

Morgan Hall scored 30 points and hit the go-ahead basket with nine seconds remaining to lift the Lady Wave to a 50-48 win over Unaka (Tenn.) in consolation round play Friday at the Borderline Classic.

Hall scored 24 of Grundy's 35 second-half points to lead a silent, but deadly comeback from a 10-point deficit and a slew of careless turnovers.

"We had some careless passes," Grundy coach Craig Plymal said. "We're anticipating cutters and when it's not there, it's not something we can simulate in practice. We do it in practice, but when we're against a good man defense we're not getting that.

"We played well enough there at the end of the third period where we thought we were going to win, we really did. Then we started forcing some turnovers in the fourth quarter. We caused some walks, we did some fullcourt press and looked pretty good with it."

Hannah Tipton scored 12 straight points in the third quarter in helping Unaka build a 34-24 lead. Grundy whittled its deficit to 37-31 by the end of the period and put slow, but sure pressure on the Rangers in the fourth period.

Hall hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the third quarter and got Grundy within 39-38 with a three-point play with 4:40 remaining in the contest.

Her free throws with 45 seconds remaining gave the Wave their first lead since 2-0. Unaka tied the score at 48 on a free throw by Lexi Perry with 25 seconds left to set up Hall's game-winner. Unaka then missed a short jumper and Grundy's Paige Owens claimed the rebound at the buzzer.

Hall added eight rebounds and three steals. Autumn Sperry kept Grundy close in the first half, when she scored seven of her nine points.

Tipton finished with 17 points and Brandi Ensor scored 11 points for Unaka.
