Former PikeView and Marshall baseball standout Joey Church continues to toil with the Eugene Emeralds, the San Diego Padres’ Class A Short-Season, club in the Northwest League.
Church, who earned his first professional win on June 25, is 1-1 in six games with 10.13 earned run average. He has struck out 12 and walked three in eight innings on the mound. Church was a 17th round draft choice last month by the Padres.
Former Tazewell pitching star Zak Wasilewski has worked in two games for the Toronto Blue Jays’ entry in the Gulf Coast League in Dunedin, Fla.
Wasilewski is 0-0 in two games with a 10.80 ERA. He has walked two and struck out one in 1 1/3 innings on the mound. Wasilewski was a 14th round draft choice in June by the Blue Jays.
Former Concord standout Drew Bailey is now pitching with the Kansas City T-Bones in the American Association, an independent league not affiliated with Major League Baseball. Bailey, who spent two seasons in the Oakland A’s’ organization, has posted an 0-1 record in five appearances. He has walked six and struck out three. Bailey was a 35th round draft choice in 2010 by the A’s.
It promises to be a “spectacular” evening at Bowen Field tonight. Matt Dean, left. and the Bluefield Blue Jays will host the Danville Braves tonight at 7:05 p.m. The game will be followed by a “Fireworks Spectacular.”
