BLUEFIELD — Former PikeView and Marshall standout Joey Church has pitched in 13 games for the Fort Wayne Tincaps in the Midwest League, a Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Church is 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA with 17 strikeouts for the Tincaps, but has allowed just two runs in his last 10 outings. Church, who was drafted in the 17th round out of Marshall last June, also pitched in two games in the California League with the Lake Elsinore Storm.
Former Tazewell and Bluefield College standout Omar “Juice” Reed has played in three of five NBA Summer League games with the Boston Celtics in Orlando, Fla. Reed has scored 15 points — including a trio of 3s — and grabbed five rebounds and dished out one assist for the Brad Stevens-coached Celtics. He had 10 points in a recent win over the Orlando Magic.
The Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star games, which have been held in Hampton for 21 years, will move to Lynchburg in 2014. The VHSCA contests were held last week. Among the local athletes to attend was Cassidy Richardson of Richlands, who had two points in the West’s 74-70 win over the East in girls basketball. Ian Mann of Giles participated in the football game, along with the Honaker duo of Ty Hall and Jordan Hess. Richlands’ Greg Mance and Honaker’s Doug Hubbard serve as coaches on the West squad, which lost to the East 35-16.
Recent Bluefield High School graduate Evan Smith finished tied for seventh place in the West Virginia Junior Amateur completed on Tuesday at Locust Hills in Charles Town. Smith, who will play at Western Carolina, followed up an opening round 73 with an 80 to finish with a 153. Ikey Judy of Lindside finished 12th with a 159.
