Virginia coaches release all-state football teams

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The individual and team efforts of Southwest District football players have been recognized in voting by the Virginia High School Coaches Association (VHSCA), which released its Group AA All-State Football Team selections over the weekend.

Richlands High School guard Garrett Arms and defensive end Brandon Gayheart and Graham High School running back Robert Henry and tackle Jonathan Bovenizer were chosen for the first team. All four players are seniors.

The quarterback of the second team is Justin McCracken of Richlands, and teammate Travis Payne made the team as a defensive lineman. Henry made the second team list as its offense player of the year.

Honorable mention was achieved by six students from Four Seasons Country — Gayheart, Caleb Jennings and Brett Clayburne of Richlands, Bovenizer and T.J. Carper of Graham, and Eric McDaniel of Tazewell.

“I guess other than winning a state championship, it would have to be high on an athlete’s list to be on an all-state team,” said Graham coach Doug Marrs.

Marrs added, “I think that Richlands brought a lot of notoriety to the Southwest District players ... as well as they were able to play this year.” Richlands advanced to the Group AA Division 3 championship game on Dec. 10, falling to Turner Ashby 27-13. Coach Charlie Newman of Turner Ashby was named the VHSCA coach of the year for Division 3.
