Richlands wins SWD soccer crown

RICHLANDS, Va. — The Richlands girls soccer team captured the final Southwest District championship with a 5-1 win over Abingdon on Thursday evening at Ernie Hicks Stadium.

Cassidy Richardson and Nadia Ashiq scored two goals each, and Autumn Meade added one goal, while Mckenley Davis dished out two assists.

Richlands scored four runs in the second half to break open a 1-1 halftime tie.

Nikki Sparks allowed just one goal to the Falcons.

Richlands (10-1-1) claimed the SWD title, and will visit Marion on Tuesday to conclude the regular season.

The SWD tournament will begin next weekend in Richlands.



Richlands 10, Tazewell 1

WARDELL, Va. — Ben Brown rapped out two doubles, knocked in four runs and pitched five shutout innings to lead the Richlands Blue Tornado past the Tazewell Bulldogs 10-1, Thursday evening in Southwest District baseball action.

Michael Horton and Jonathan Cochran had three hits apiece for the Blues. Horton had two RBIs and Cochran scored two runs.

Luke Parsons had two hits to lead Tazewell.

Richlands (8-6, 4-2) plays at Carroll County on Monday.

Boys Soccer

Fort Chiswell 9, Narrows 5

NARROWS, Va. — Narrows, playing a man short for nearly the entire game due to a red card in the 10th minute, dropped a Mountain Empire District match to Fort Chiswell.

Trailing 4-2 at halftime, Narrows fought back to tie the game at five. Jackson Haymore had two goals for the Green Wave while Siera Ogden, Aaron Collinsand  Jake Ballard a goal apiece.

Narrows is 0-10 overall and 0-5 in the MED and returns to action Monday night at Grayson.
