Prep roundup: Ray, Blue Tornado zap Carroll County

WARDELL, Va. — Chase Ray knocked three hits, including a first-inning double that got things started for the Richlands Blue Tornado in a 4-2 district win over Carroll County on Tuesday at Southwest Virginia Community College.

In the Blues’ three-run first inning, after Ray’s double, Michael Horton and River Michaels followed with RBI singles. Michaels had two hits on the day.

Richlands turned three double plays on defense. Ray started two of them.

Josh Underwood had two hits for the Cavaliers.

Ben Brown picked up the pitching win and Andy Guerriero pitched the seventh to earn the save. The Cavaliers’ Reece Edwards threw 121 pitches and struck out 12 batters.

Richlands (6-4, 2-1 SWD) hosts Princeton today.

Haysi sweeps Panthers

HAYSI, Va. — Hunter Suther-land and Zack Owens had three hits each in a doubleheader sweep of Twin Valley.

Tyler Smith had a double and three runs batted in a 4-1 decision in the nightcap. Haysi won the opener 8-2.

Jacob Kowalski and J.D. Lowe had a hit in each game for the Panthers.

EAST RIVER — Forrest Yates netted four goals, including the first and last of the Mountain Empire District match on Tuesday at East River Soccer Complex.

Samuel Stowers scored the second goal for Graham, Hugh Clary made it 5-0 at halftime, and Alex Aiello logged the next goal.

Hunter Cook and Brenden Wehrle shared the shutout. Cook had three saves and Wehrle had four.

Graham (5-1-1) plays at Richlands this evening at 7 p.m.



Girls soccer

TAZEWELL, Va. — Alissa Gembach and Georgie Ferrell each scored twice for the Falcons on the Tazewell High School field. Kate Snapp had 18 saves for the Bulldogs.

Taylor Catron led the Tazewell offense, and the defense was headed up by Haley Christian and Samantha Altizer.

Tazewell (3-4-1, 1-2-1 SWD) is back on its home pitch Thursday to play George Wythe.
