Prep roundup: Marion beats Tazewell in SWD consolation

Pipestem Christian boys, Montcalm girls win

HILLSVILLE, Va. — Brenton Alford scored 24 points and Ethan Richardson added 18, leading Marion to a 71-55 Southwest District consolation win over Tazewell on Friday night at Carroll County High School.

Tazewell was paced by Colin Hancock with 17 points and 12 from Jalen Jordan.

Marion (17-7) will play in the Region IV tournament next week. Tazewell dropped to 8-16 on the season.

Abingdon shocked Carroll County in the SWD championship game, defeating the Cavaliers 75-71.

SUMMERSVILLE — The Pipestem Christian Academy Panthers advanced to the WVCA Tournament championship game, defeating Teays Valley Christian in Friday’s semifinals.

Aleks Lane led the Panthers with 17, Austin Peyton added 17, Trevor Shorter 13 and Zayne Worley 10. Elias Beacon led Teays Valley with 16.

Pipestem will play the winner of the Cross Lanes Christian and Greater Beckley Christian for the championship this afternoon. The Cross Lanes-Greater Beckley game was underway late Friday night.

MONTCALM — A trio scored in double digits to lead the Montcalm Lady Generals past the LIberty-Raleigh Raiders, Friday night at the MHS gymnasium. Leslie Kelley led the way with 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Hannah Johnson added 13 and Miranda Kendrick tallied 11 with three assists.

Montcalm hosts Greater Beckley, Monday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the sectional tournament.

ONA — McKenzie Akers scored 24 points and dished out five assists, leading the Tigers to a Mountain State Athletic Conference tournament win  on Thursday night.

The win clinched third place in the MSAC for the Tigerettes.

Marissa Mullins added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Princeton.

Hannah Preservati contributed eight points, eight boards and three assists.

Mullins had three of Princeton’s eight 3s.

Sierra Jordan led the Knights (16-6) with 28 points, while Emily Pitkin added 12.

Princeton (17-4) will begin sectional play on Wednesday against Woodrow Wilson in Fayetteville.
