G-Men claim MED wrestling championship

GALAX, Va. — The Graham G-Men captured the Mountain Empire District wrestling championship during the meet held on Thursday at Galax High School.

Graham entered competitors in 12 of 14 weight classes, and claimed eight  first place and four second place awards.

Dustin Hagerman, who improved to 44-1 on the season, was selected as the MED Wrestler of the Year, claiming the MED title in the 113-pound weight class.

Graham wrestling coach Tim Woodward and assistant Ben Fritts earned Coach of the Year honors.

Graham scored 203.5 points to easily outdistance Galax (139), Fort Chiswell (69) and Grayson County (65).

MED members Bland County and Narrows do not have wrestling programs. Graham did not have entrants in the 106-pound and 138-pound weight classes.

In addition to Hagerman, MED champions from Graham included Shane Hudson (120 pounds), Tristan Evans (126), Austin Miller (132), Kyshon Lee (170), Robert Compton (190), Everett Vest (220) and Colin Beavers (285), all of whom were 2-0 on Thursday.

Four G-Men finished second with 1-1 marks, including Jacob Evans (145), Dakota Byrd (152), Aaron Thompson (160) and Levi Stroupe (182).

MED titles went to six non-Graham wrestlers, including Grayson County’s Jacob Hale (106), Worth Carrico (138) and Clay Anders (152), along with Galax grapplers, Kris Robinson (145), Joseph Dixon (160) and Caleb Spurlin (182).

Graham returns to the mats for the Region C meet on Feb. 8-9 at Rural Retreat High School. The state tournament will be held on Feb. 15-16 at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va.
