Trailing 49-47 with 4.1 remaining in the game and Mountain Mission shooting a two-shot foul, things looked mighty bleak for a River View win last evening against the visiting Lady Challengers from across Bradshaw Mountain.
A lane violation on the first free throw by the Lady Raiders, gave Mountain Mission a missed opportunity back. Two more misses, with the latter being rebounded by senior Chelsey Dobbs on the right side of the bucket provided one last hope, albeit a slim one, with the length of the court in front of her.
Dobbs, playing with a swollen knee, dribbled toward her basket, stopped about 58 feet short and launched a rainbow that revealed a pot of gold at the other end, as the basketball broke the nets as the horn sounded, giving the Lady Raiders a jaw-dropping 50-49 win.
That three, the only one of the evening by the View, gave Dobbs game-scoring honors with 20, as sophomore Kiersten Dority added 17.
Heron Hailu topped a quartet of twin digit scorers for Mountain Mission with 16, while Nebyat Adern chipped in 11 and Tsion Negussie and Lensa Assefa contributed 10 apiece.
The first eight minutes of the contest was a nip-and-tuck affair, with the lead changing hands eight times before Hailu's free throw with 6:12 left before the break produced the only tie, at 14, prior to the Lady Challengers running off 13 more unanswered points for a 27-14 advantage just inside the two minute mark.
Hailu had six of those 13, while Adern matched that half-dozen effort in that run.
Mountain Mission, losers for only the fifth time in twenty games, led 27-19 at intermission and 40-33 heading into the final chapter.
The third featured Dobbs with nine markers and Dority with five to keep within range of the Virginia-based school.
Ellamae Johnson's free throw with 3:20 remaining in the contest pulled River View within one, at 43-42 before the Lady Challengers opened up a 49-44 advantage with only 1:39 remaining.
River View, with some timely defense and the aid of some poor foul shooting by Mountain Mission, scored the final six points of the game, including Dobbs' bomb to win it.
Dority dropped in one of two foul tries at the 1:34 mark, followed by Sissy Waldron's bucket with 13 showing.
Exclaimed Lady Raider head coach Gehrig Justice, "I was in disbelief. She's (Dobbs) strong. Not many girls can get it that far."
River View will visit Hurley tonight, while the Lady Challengers travel to Mount View Thursday night.
Dobbs finished her night's work with 20 rebounds, 5 blocked shots and 4 assists, while Dority and Johnson recorded 6 steals apiece.
