HURLEY, Va. —
The bad news for Council was it took just three shots after the third quarter.
The good news for Council was it made all three, and just enough free throws in overtime to edge Hurley, 59-53, in Black Diamond District play Saturday night.
Josh Viers scored a game-high 18 points, and was 6-of-8 from the line in the extra period for the Cobras, who squandered a 12-point second-half lead despite nearly flawless execution in building it.
"We almost let it slip away," said Council coach Patrick Wade, whose club turned the ball over just twice in the first half and ten times in the fourth period. "But we've finally figured out some of the things we need to do to win."
Justin Mathis gave Council (7-8, 3-2) the lead for good in OT with a 3-point play with 3:36 remaining and finished with 14 points before fouling out. Mathis also had a double-double with 10 rebounds, while Lucas Barton added 11 points.
Wes Peck's 3-pointer with 1:03 remaining in regulation forced the overtime period.
Peck (12 points), Nick Gibson (14) and Tanner Charles (13) all scored in double figures for Hurley (5-8, 1-4) and all three of them fouled out. Gibson and Peck each had three steals, all after halftime.
Greg Stacy scored nine points and had a key bucket in the fourth period, when the Rebels gradually chipped away at a 41-31 deficit. Council's biggest lead was 35-23, in the third quarter.
"I'm proud of our effort," Hurley coach Mark Cooper said. "We let Council build a lead, but we kept playing hard and we didn't quit."
