TAZEWELL, Va. —
Up, up, and away.
Mack Owens and Josh Hess sparked the take-off, and Abingdon rode a 32-point third quarter to coast past stunned Tazewell 80-61 Tuesday in Southwest District play.
The Falcons, who trailed by a basket, outscored the suddenly error-prone Bulldogs (5-10, 0-3) by 19 in the pivotal period.
“I thought our defense made that run possible, and really, we got that going late in the second quarter when we made a run to get close before the break,” noted Abingdon (13-2, 2-1) coach B. J. Lasley. “We were able to get some stops against them (Tazewell) our shooters kept working until they got it right.”
Owens fired in 27 while Hess tallied 22 — including four three pointers — to go along with Chris Sigmon’s 18 in a balanced Falcon attack.
The homestanding Bulldogs got the short end of a rough-and-tumble second half, losing standout center Noah Walker with 1:22 left in the third period.
Walker had another sterling effort with three dunks, 12 rebounds and 16 points in less than three quarters of action. Walker grabbed 11 of his rebounds before halftime.
Jalen Jordan again paced Tazewell, netting 19 points and overcoming two tough fouls inside while Jesse Mountain had a solid outing and added 10 more for Tazewell.
Tanner Catron hit a pair of treys, with eight points for Tazewell.
“I have a hard time explaining how the game turned out tonight,” said a visibly disappointed THS coach Lee Walker.
Tazewell was outstanding with 14-of-17 at the line. Abingdon made 14-for-19 free throws.
The Falcons host Marion Friday and Tazewell is at Richlands Thursday in a quad match with the girls JV the opening game at approximately 4 p.m.
