Princeton made the plays at winning time. The Tigers used a rock solid fourth quarter to knock Patrick Henry-Roanoke from the ranks of the unbeaten, 70-59, in the championship game of the Alpha Natural Resources Tournament at Princeton High School.
In a first half played at a high level, Patriots guard Marcus Banks fired in 19 points to stake PH to a 32-30 halftime lead. Ryan Meadows scored 12 to keep Princeton within striking distance.
In the second half a Meadows three-point-play gave Princeton a short-lived 43-39 advantage before Banks nailed back-to-back three balls and the Patriots led 49-47 entering the fourth quarter.
After PH expanded its lead to 53-47, the Tigers appeared to be fading with six minutes left. Meadows hit an acrobatic left-handed lay up on the front end of a three-point-play to spark a comeback. Coming down the stretch Princeton hit 13 consecutive fourth quarter foul shots, sophomore Aaron Ferguson fired in eight fourth quarter points and Princeton played flawless ball to close out the win.
Princeton made 22-of-23 free throws in the contest.
Meadows led all scorers with 33 while Banks led PH, now 11-1, with 30.
