Ashiq gets the hat trick in Richlands soccer victory

LEBANON, Va. — It was a thriller from the outset but Lebanon was able to pull out a 2-0 win over Richlands in Southwest District boys soccer at Tommy Bryant Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

“It was good to get a win but we need to keep improving each day,” Lebanon goal keeper Trevor Owens said. “We’ve had a couple of bad losses recently, but I’m proud of my teammates today. We just have to keep working to get better each week.”

Owens had the shutout and was aided by a strong Pioneer attack. Owens only had six saves.

“We moved the ball around,” said Owens. “It was a good offensive day. It was intense, we only had one goal most of the day but we finished out strong and that’s the main thing.”

Peyton Owens picked up an assist as he set up James Sykes for a goal less than 10 minutes into the first half. That’s where the score remained until Peyton Owens dropped a floater in the net to give the Pioneers some cushion with a 2-0 lead with less than nine minutes left in the match.

Lebanon (7-3-1) kept the ball on the Richlands end attacking a large part of the game.

“We’ve been working on our passing and movement but it didn’t click today,” said Richlands coach Chris Hunt. “We have some injuries but that shouldn’t be an excuse. In the second half, we adjusted some things and changed our formation to get the ball, but it was out in the field and not near their goal. That was the frustrating thing.”

Richlands goal keeper Alex Bandy had a strong game with a couple of outstanding saves. The defense was solid most of the day.

“Our defense was good,” Hunt said. “When we let the second goal in we kind of dropped our heads a little. We had to change some people around.

“Alex had some good saves. He kept us in the game and did a great job.”

Richlands (1-7-1) will host Tazewell on Friday.
