Tazewell’s Brewster to swim for King

TAZEWELL, Va. — There was a first-time kind of pool party in Tazewell Tuesday.

Tyler Brewster of Tazewell High School signed a letter of intent  to swim competitively for King College in Bristol. Brewster advanced to the state swim meet for the Bulldog team and has earned many awards during his years on the THS aquatic group.

“This is a real honor for me,” noted Brewster, who became the first Tazewell student to sign to swim collegiately. “I look forward to the challenge and I want to keep improving — keep getting better in the events at the next level.”

Brewster is the son of Robert and Terri Brewster of Tazewell and an outstanding student-athlete.

Not only has he proven to be college material athletically, but he has compiled a 3.8 grade point average which places him 17th in a class of 137 members. He is considering a career in broadcast journalism with an emphasis on sports.

“Whatever career he (Tyler) chooses will be fine,” said his mother.

“He said when he was little that he wanted to swim in college and even though I was a little skeptical I told him, ‘Whatever you want to do I will support you,’ and now he has gone forward and reached his goal. I am so proud of him and will continue to support him.”

His father, Robert, said, “I am very proud and more than a little pleased that Tyler can be not exactly at home but still close enough for us to go and watch him compete. This is good for all of the family. I think he (Tyler) realizes the implications of what he can accomplish and we are all cheering for him and ready to help him continue with his career goal.”

Brewster’s coach, Tommy Parham, is very happy for his standout swimmer.

“This (college signing) could not happen to a finer young man,” said Parham, who as director of the local YMCA doubles as the swim team leader for THS.

“Tyler is a great swimmer and he exemplifies leadership. I am sorry to lose him from our team because he leads by hard-working example but I am thrilled to have us watch a teammate go on to the next level.”

Tazewell principal Dave Bockes said, “Tyler has been a great student and outstanding athlete.

“This is good for him and a great example for our students. I look forward to his continued success at King College and he is paving the way for future success for our high school swimmers here in Tazewell.”

Brewster’s sister, Miranda, was also present for the signing. The other members of the Bulldog swim team were on hand to cheer for their teammate.
