Wet grounds halt first day of Coppinger

BLUEFIELD — The organizers of the 41st Allen D. Coppinger Jr. Baseball Invitational will try again today to get the venerable tournament underway, with games at two local fields.

Rain and resulting wet grounds forced Friday’s first-round games to be called off. Those games are now scheduled for this evening at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton, where Bluefield will take on Montcalm at 5 p.m., followed by a matchup of Princeton and Mount View — on the Tigers’ home field.

At Bowen Field today, the previously printed schedule will be in effect, pitting teams from across the state line against each other. Richlands takes on the Fayetteville Pirates at 1 p.m., and PikeView will face off with Tazewell in a game tentatively set to begin at 3:30.

The fifth annual Yo-Na Tournament at Skip Dillow Field in Bastian, Va., is scheduled to start today with four games.

The Montcalm Generals start the tournament off by playing George Wythe at 11 a.m. The Generals will then head for Bowen Field to play a Coppinger opening game. The Yo-Na host team, Bland County, will play Hurley at about 6:30 p.m. in the last of the quartet of contests.

Today’s forecast is for mostly sunny conditions with a high near 56, according to the National Weather Service.

The complete schedules, subject to change, are listed above.

Yet another rain system predicted to move into the area in the early hours of Monday and to bring rainfall through most of the daylight hours.
