Offensive woes continue as Rays fall to Twins

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. — The Elizabethton Twins banged out 15 hits, while allowing Princeton just five, but they still had to hang on for a 5-4 Appalachian League win over the Rays on Wednesday night in front of 621 spectators at Joe O’Brien Field.

Brian Santy had three hits and drove in two runs, and Bryan Haar homered for the Twins, who led 5-1 before the Rays rallied for three runs in the seventh. Zach Granite, Derek Rodriguez, Javier Pimentel and Ryan Walker had two hits apiece in the win.

Hunter Lockwood paced Princeton with two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Douglas Duran and Leopoldo Correa each drew a pair of walks and scored a run.

Princeton (1-5) took a short-lived 1-0 in the first when Duran walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Spencer Edwards and scored on a double from Lockwood.

Elizabethton (6-1) quickly took the lead back for good, scoring two in the bottom of the frame. Haar homered with two outs off Princeton starter Jorge Rodriguez. Rory Rhodes followed with a double and scored on single from Santy.

The lead grew to 3-1 in the third on a double by Ryan Walker and scored on a double play ball off the bat of Haar. Princeton reliever Geisel De La Cruz was greeted in the fifth with RBI singles by Santy and Rodriguez.

The Rays finally put together a two-out three-run rally in the seventh. Three straight Princeton batters drew walks, and Elias Torres followed a pitching change with a three-run double to left field.

Trailing by one in the top of the ninth, the Rays did get a runner to third with one out, but Brandon Peterson struck out a batter who promptly still reached first base. Torres then grounded into a force play to end the game.

These clubs will meet again tonight at 7 p.m.

Princeton will return home on Saturday for the beginning of a three-game series with the Johnson City Cardinals.
