Roundup: G-Girls rally to beat Providence on soccer pitch

EAST RIVER — The Graham G-Girls soccer team fought back from a 3-3 tie in the second half to defeat Providence Academy, a private school from Johnson City, Tenn., 6-3 on Monday evening at East River Soccer Complex.

Liz Workman started the scoring with an unassisted goal for Graham (6-1) around the 10-minute mark, executing a looping shot from about 25 yards out that went over the goalkeeper’s head.

Kali Furry gave Graham a 2-0 lead, assisted by Whitney Browning after a back-and-forth exchange down the field between the two. After Providence’s Erica Roller cut the lead in half, Morgan Whisman gave Graham its 3-1 halftime lead with an unassisted shot from 18-yard mark, landing just inside the far post.

Kyler Williams of Providence scored twice to tie the match. Workman then scored the go-ahead tally, Alysia Leung added to the lead after an assist from Elizabeth Barker, and Browning wrapped up the scoring with an unassisted goal, battling through four defenders.

Karly Morgan was in goal throughout for Graham, which plays today at Giles.


Boys Soccer

Graham 6, Fort Chiswell 0

EAST RIVER — Forrest Yates netted three of Graham’s six goals on Monday at East River Soccer Complex, and Hunter Cook had six saves in goal, recording a shutout.

Alex Aiello bagged Graham’s first goal, followed by two from Yates and a fourth by Samuel Stowers. Yates picked up the hat trick after that, and Tanner Winesett had the final goal.

Graham (3-0-1) plays Giles at 6:30 p.m. today at East River.

Grayson County 10, Narrows 2

NARROWS, Va. — Jake Ballard scored twice for Narrows in the first half, but the Blue Devils took a 6-2 lead into halftime and cruised to victory. Frankie Kantsious had 16 saves in goal for the Green Wave (0-7).

Narrows hosts Galax on Wednesday.



Montcalm 16, Meadow Bridge 1

COOPERS — John Casto and Steven Whitteker each struck out five Wildcats in the Generals’ big win on Monday.

Casto and Matt Pennington batted 1 for 1, while Josh Clower was 1 for 3 and Dakota Lanter was 1 for 2.

For Meadow Bridge, senior Zach Wingerd was 2 for 2 and Shane Harless was 2 for 3.

Montcalm (6-8) plays Wednesday at home against Twin Valley.
