PikeViews scores late to beat River View

TAZEWELL, Va. — The PikeView Panthers broke a 1-1 tie with six runs in the top of the seventh Saturday afternoon, as they took a 7-3 win over River View in the opening round of the 40th Coppinger Invitational Baseball Tournament, played at Lou Peery Field.

Second baseman Jordan Hardin started the rally, that saw a dozen Panthers come to the plate in the seventh, with a walk.

Winning pitcher Austin Cordell laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, but reached first on an errant throw.

With one out, first baseman Zach Meadows drove both Hardin and Cordell home to start the run avalanche.

Carter Shrewsbury, the PikeView center fielder, added a single in the frame, as did Hardin, while rightfielder Ryan Roberts reached on yet another error, Keian Lee drew another free pass and Hunter Moses and Cordell both reached  base after being hit by a pitch.

Meadows, Roberts, Shrewsbury and Lee added a run apiece for the Panthers, who move to 13-6 with the win.

Matt Thornsbury and Dee Duff singled each in the bottom of the frame, while Jeffrey Kidwell doubled, but the Raiders, now 5-7, were able to answer the half dozen PikeView runs with only a pair to pen the final 7-3 score.

Hardin, Shrewsbury and Lee all recorded two hits apiece for the Panthers, while Cordell and Meadows knocked in a pair of runs each.

Cordell pitched the complete game, fanning seven and walking only three, while scattering five hits.

Assessed PikeView head coach Josh Wyatt of the difference in the seventh, “I think we were a little more patient. … We were not ourselves at the plate at all today.

“The last inning, we were a little more patient and they walked a few and we put the bat on the ball when we had to.”

Jerad Metcalf, first-year head coach at River View, said a big inning by the opposition) “has been the story of our season.  We give up one big inning and we end up losing.”

PikeView will face Tazewell Monday at 7 in the second game of a doubleheader, as the Coppinger continues at Bowen Field.

River View will travel to East Ridge, Ky., on Tuesday.
