Sweet six for Lady Blues

Bluefield State moves over .500

BLUEFIELD — Six in a row.

The Bluefield State College Lady Blues won their sixth game in a row to move over .500 for the first time this season as they defeated the Chowan University Hawks 72-62, Wednesday evening at Ned Shott Gymnasium.

“I thought we came out and played with great effort, but I thought we didn’t do little things we needed to do,” said BSC head coach J.J. Oliver. “We missed some inside shots in the paint and then we didn’t capitalize on our free throws. But the name of the game is winning. Obviously w made enough plays down the stretch to win. We played again as a team and 62 points is still a good defensive effort.”

After early ties at two, four and six, BSC moved out to a six point lead, 14-8 on Shay Gravely’s three ball with 11:45 remaining in the first half. Jenaya Abernathy’s long two-pointer gave the Lady Blues a 19-8 lead.

Chowan fought back and closed to within four on two straight buckets by former Davis & Elkins player Rachel Gostomski, but State’s defense stepped to the fore. A defensive stop on a five second call with just under two minutes to go followed by another Abernathy basket pushed the lead back to 10 and Tasia Nolan’s put-back with 20 seconds left in the half allowed BSC to carry a 39-28 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Blues came out smoking hot in the second half, going on an 8-2 run to start the half, forcing Chowan to call time. The largest lead of the night came when Nolan stole the ball and Gravely scored on a feed from Kearah Jefferys to make it 51-33 with 14 minutes left in the game.

Chowan cut the lead to 10 midway through the half on a pair of free throws by Alisha Mobley, but BSC pulled away when Jefferys was fouled, it was called an intentional, and Chowan coach Patrick Mashuda was assessed a technical foul. Jefferys sank all four free throws and State went up 62-48.

Chowan again fought back and in the final three minutes came to within eight points of the lead, but the Lady Blues were able to make enough of their free throws to maintain the lead and gain the victory.

Four Lady Blues scored in double digits led by Jefferys with 17. Nolan and Gravely added 12 each and Abernathy tallied 10. Nolan had a team-high eight rebounds, Jefferys pulled down six and Hope Smith five. Nolan also had five assists, two blocks and a steal. Jefferys added four assists and three steals.

Kaela Nelson was Chowan’s high scorer with 11 points. Summer Curtis grabbed 10 rebounds and Chantel Roberts pulled down nine.

Bluefield State is now 10-9 on the season and plays Saturday at Ohio Valley. Chowan fell to 10-11.
