Bluefield rides its bench past Bobcats

HINTON — The bench was the difference.

Bluefield saw an early 12-point lead evaporate in the early third period but the Beavers’ second unit jump started the rally and Bluefied beat Summers County 61-51 in the Bobcats’ Lair.

Early on it looked like it would be easy for Bluefield as an Anthony Eades jump shot gave the Beavers a 21-9 lead in the early second period.

Bobcats guard Ashton Garton triggered a Summers County rally, hitting three three-pointers and scoring 13 in the period and Bluefield’s lead was trimmed to three, 29-26 at the half.

After the break a T.J. Smith trey gave the Bobcats a 34-31 lead two minutes deep into the third quarter, causing Bluefiedl to go to its bench. The Beavers second unit out-scored Summers County 13-4 for the remainder of the period and Bluefield led 44-38 after three.

In the early fourth quarter the Bobcats cut the deficit to one point, 44-43 on a Smith three-point play. The Beavers then scored on four consecutive possessions and kept Summers County off the scoreboard during a vital 8-0 run.

D.J. Edwards led a balanced Bluefield attack with 14. He was joined in double figures by Eades with 14 and Lykel Collier with 12. Smith’s 14 paced Summers County, 4-8, Garton added 13 and freshman Dacota Thomas had 11.

The Beavers return to action Friday night at the Brushfork Armory entertaining Greenbrier East.
