Beavers dam up Red Devils

OAK HILL — Shaking off a sluggish start, Bluefield used its pressure defense to create early offense and the Beavers cruised to a 63-50 win at Oak Hill, Tuesday night.

Trailing 6-1 three minutes into the game, Bluefield’s Lykel Collier and D.J. Edwards triggered an 11-2 run and Collier’s three put Bluefield up 12-8 with two mnutes left in the opening period. In the second quarter Bluefield’s swtiching pressure defenses throttled Oak Hill’s attack and the Beavers out-scored the Red Devils 16-4 to take a 30-17 lead to the locker room.

In the third period Bluefield again applied pressure and stretched its lead to 50-25 entering the final frame. The Red Devils outscored Bluefield 25-13 in the final period to narrow the game-ending spread to 13, 63-50.

A balanced Beavers attack was paced by Edwards with 13, Collier and Anthony Eades had 12 apiece, Jordan Ponder had nine and Corey Coppola eight.

Oak Hill’s Jalen Jones led all scorers with 18.

Buefield, 9-2, travels to summers county tonight.
