GRUNDY, Va. —
Grundy is a little bigger, a little deeper and a little faster than Council and it all showed Tuesday night.
The Golden Wave ran past the Cobras, 72-48, in Black Diamond District action at Grundy High School.
Charles McCoy led three double figure scorers for Grundy with 16 points. He led a Wave fast break that took over the game late in the first quarter.
Christian Jackson added 15 points and Wes Peck scored 14 points for Grundy. Jackson hit three straight 3-pointers as Grundy snapped an 11-11 tie and took command with a 20-8 run just before halftime.
“We came out wanting to run and get out in transition and try and set the tone early,” Grundy coach Todd Tiller said. “Council always plays us tough and it took us a while to get going. We were finally able to knock down some shots and loosen up their defense.”
Josh Viers scored 14 points and Ty Mackey added 11 for the Cobras, who stayed within striking distance until late in the third quarter.
"Grundy played well, they shoot well and they defend well,” Council coach Patrick Wade said. “They’re just a good all-around team. We just don’t match up very well with them, especially inside.”
The Cobras went cold, missing 10 straight shots at one point in the second half. Six different players had two more assists for Grundy, led by Peck with five and Charles McCoy with four.
“In the second half we were able to get some layups in transition,” Tiller added. “We’ve been playing really good team basketball lately.”
The biggest margin was 29 points, 72-43.
