BURLINGTON, N.C. —
The Burlington Royals scored nine times in the fifth inning and went on to defeat the Princeton Rays 14-7 Saturday night in the series finale between the two teams.
Burlington scored twice in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Princeton charged back and took the lead in the second. Travis Flores smacked a grand slam home run, his fourth long ball of the year, and when the inning ended the Rays were ahead 6-2.
The Royals added a run in the third against Rays starting pitcher Jacob Faria, who left after five innings with a 6-3 lead. Luis Cabrera entered in the fifth and did not retire a batter, allowing four runs on three hits. He was relieved in the inning by Oscar Armenta who allowed five more runs on five hits.
Princeton scored a single run in the eighth and Burlington added a pair in the bottom of the eighth.
Hunter Lockwood, Coty Blanchard and Elias Torres each had a pair of hits for Princeton.
Every Burlington player picked up at least one hit and two, Mauricio Romos and Bobby Brown, had three hits a piece. Sam Bates homered for the Royals. Burlington had 16 hits of which five were for extra bases.
Cabrera took the loss for Princeton and Kevin McCarthy picked up the win for Burlington in relief of starter Cesar Ogando. McCarthy came into the game in the second inning and pitched four-and-a-third innings of one hit ball and struck out six.
Princeton returns home to Hunnicutt Field this evening to host Pulaski in the first of a three-game series.
