Black Diamond girls finished as Panthers, Tigers fall

(Continued)

LEBANON, Va. — Castlewood 37, Haysi 36

It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Castlewood girls. Mission accomplished. The Blue Devils won Cumberland District regular season and tournament title and now you can add a trip to the state quarterfinals to the list, along with the opportunity to claim a regional title.

The contest was in doubt until the final buzzer sounded but Castlewood took a 37-36 win over Haysi at Charles C. Long Gymnasium to advance to the Region D, Division 1 title game against Clintwood on Saturday.

“People have underestimated these girls all year,” Castlewood coach Barry Ruff said. “We really didn’t play like a number one seed tonight, that’s the biggest thing.”

Haley Crabtree led the Castlewood offense with 10 points. Erin Hyden dropped in 12 points for Haysi.
