Golden Wave gets help in thrashing of Twin Valley

GRUNDY, Va. — Grundy took advantage of few walks, a few errors and just a few hits to put an end to its seven-game losing streak.

Isaac Cantrell's bases-clearing double in the bottom of the sixth gave the Golden Wave a 12-1 win over Buchanan County rival Twin Valley in Black Diamond District baseball action Thursday evening at Enoch's Branch park.

The three-run knock to deep left field ended the game under the 10-run mercy rule.

It was just the seventh hit of the game for Grundy (3-7). The Wave also drew seven walks and the Panthers (0-5) committed three errors.

"We weren't knocking the cover off the ball, but we had some to fall in for us," Grundy coach Scotty Bostic said. "The hardest hit balls I think we had they made good plays on them."

Daniel Tiller drove in two runs with a single and a sacrifice fly, Charles McCoy doubled in a run and Ethan Cooper singled one in for the Golden Wave.

Dylan Wolford got an RBI with a bases-loaded walk, while Jordan McCoy singled, walked twice and scored three runs.

Freshman Casey Cooper smacked a triple and a double for Twin Valley. The Panthers scored their only run in the third when Jake Kowalski walked, reached third on an error and came home on an RBI ground out off the bat of freshman Roger McClanahan.

"We usually start out playing well, we just can't finish the game well," Twin Valley coach Chad Stevens said. "We hit the ball some, but we couldn't get them in.

“We've left runners stranded all year long. We were just making simple mistakes. We just got to work to get better."

Ethan Cooper allowed four hits and struck out seven to earn a six-inning complete game win for Grundy.

"Ethan did a good job on the mound," Bostic said. "He didn't walk many. I think he just got a little tired there at the end. "His curveball worked pretty good and he did a good job keeping them off-balance."

Twin Valley pitchers Carlos Sanchez and Dylan Charles combined on 10 strikeouts. Sanchez took the loss.
