Giles athletes to play at next level

PEARISBURG, Va. — Four Giles High School athletes took part in a signing ceremony on Thursday to play at the next level, according to information provided by the school.

That includes Alex Hawks, who will play volleyball at Concord, John Shelor, who will play basketball at Emory & Henry and Kory Wilson, who will play golf at Bluefield College.

Cody Rhodes was also part of the ceremony, having committed earlier in the week as a preferred walk-on for the Virginia Tech football team.

Soccer standout Jake Spiegel didn’t take part in the ceremony, but will play next at Bridgewater.

Hawks, who has a 4.10 GPA, has earned numerous awards for the Spartans, including all-state, all-region and all-district honors. She has been invited to participate in the VHSCA East-West All-Star game in July. Hawks led Giles to the 2A state semifinals two years ago.

Shelor was a Group 2A second team performer this season, scoring 24.1 points a game.Wilson was a two-time all-state golfer for the Spartans, while Rhodes was a standout for Giles’ 2A state championship team in the fall.
