Honaker faces Colonial Beach in semis

WISE, Va. — Misty Davis Miller once played in a state semifinal game.

Now she gets to relive the experience, albeit from a completely different perspective. The former Honaker standout is now the head coach at her alma mater as they take on Colonial Beach in the Group 1A state semifinals at 2:45 p.m. today at the David J. Prior Convocation Center at UVa.-Wise.

Miller was the point guard for the last Lady Tiger squad to reach the state semifinals in the fall of 1996. She has discussed her experiences with her team and she's as thrilled about it all now as she was then.

"I've shared personal experiences with the girls about playing in the final four and as a coach it's just as exciting, and it is gratifying," she said. "This is a good group of girls who've worked hard and deserves to be where they are."

Honaker (22-6) is the 1A West Region champion. Colonial Beach (20-2) is the 1A East runner-up.

The Drifters are a relatively small, but quick team that relies heavily on pressure defense.

"From what I've seen they're not big, but they're very quick and very aggressive," Miller said. "They play a pressing, trapping defense, fullcourt and halfcourt."

Colonial Beach also relies on Conference 43 Player of the Year Sydni Carey, their leading scorer.

"She's their point guard," Miller added. "She handles the ball well and she's their go-to player on offense."

Honaker's 1996 final four team lost to Black Diamond District rival Haysi in the Group A semifinals. Haysi lost to Central-Woodstock in the finals.

Today's Honaker-Colonial Beach winner will play either Altavista or Chilhowie in the state finals Saturday, March 15  at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond.
